Elina Brotherus | ”Running past camera – Running toward camera” | APERTURA Madrid Gallery Weekend | 12 September – 28 December 2019

In this new exhibition we intend to revisit her most recent projects through new artworks which were not seen before at the gallery. In her awarded “Carpe Fucking Diem” (2011-15) photobook she talks from an autobiographical approach about her adventure to have children in which she failed and about her self-acceptance of a life that inextricably goes on.

In “Les Femmes de la Maison Carré” (2015-) through a residency in Maison Louis Carré in May 2015, Elina continued her exploration of the relationship between individual and space, responding to the environment of the house and its surroundings.

In “The Baldessari Assignments” (2016) she employs John Baldessari’s “art ideas” that he requested his students to make at the CalArts University in the 70’s.

In “Règle du Jeu” (2016-17) she employs strategies like appropriation and humor with amazing and illuminating results, taking as references the “event scores” -instructions written for performances- by the Fluxus artists of the 60’s.

In “Meaningless Work” (2016-) according to Elina herself: “It keeps me curious and allows me to make new discoveries, all while continuing to do what I know best. It enables me to get back both in front and behind the camera. Citing Arthur Köpcke: “People ask: Why? I ask: Why not!”.
