Next Thursday May 5th we open a solo exhibition of works by the Italian photographer Claudia Fuggetti (Taranto, 1993) within the framework of the PhotoEspaña Festival.
We live in an era where nature is constantly changing before our eyes, but our perception of it remains fragmented and unstable. In the past, the landscape was tangible and accessible, today it is a perceptual echo that persists even when we believe we no longer see it.
“Palinopsia” symbolizes our relationship with contemporary nature: a transformed landscape filtered through memories and altered perceptions. As philosopher David Abram states, the environmental crisis is also a perceptual crisis: we have reduced the natural world to a mental abstraction, disconnected from sensory experience.
The “Metamorphosis” series, which is the basis of this project, represents this tension through altered photographic landscapes, suggesting a nature in constant dissolution and reconfiguration. According to Donna Haraway, the perception of nature is a cultural construction in evolution. “Palinopsia” is not only a visual phenomenon but also a cognitive condition: we see nature through images of the past, preventing us from fully capturing the present. Unstable landscapes and chromatic alterations represent this fluctuating perception.
Colour is key in the exhibition, not only as an aesthetic element but also as a symbol of the environmental crisis. Chromatic modifications highlight the transformation of the environment, making visible what would otherwise go unnoticed. These artificial tones emphasize human intervention and the gradual dissolution of nature. The human presence is contemplative and distant. Figures do not interact with nature but observe it, as witnesses to a world that changes while our perception remains anchored in the past. However, like the effect of palinopsia, nature does not completely disappear. It persists as a visual and sensory residue, waiting to be recognized before vanishing definitively.
