Cecilia de Val | La Pesanteur | PhotoEspaña | 29 May – 26 July 2014

This is a project curated by Chus Tudelilla in which we will be able to enjoy the brand-new “La Pesanteur” series by De Val following the “All about Eve” travelling exhibition produced by the Cervantes Institute for which she was selected.

“La Pesanteur” is the title of the photographic project initiated by Cecilia de Val (Zaragoza, 1975) in 2012; in her own words it deals with the symbolic approach to the helplessness that the humanist philosopher Martin Buber wrote about: “The dilemma of men is rethought every time that the pact between the world and the human race is terminated in times in which the human being seems to find himself in the world as a lone helpless stranger”.

Neglected on the surface of an always peripheral landscape, the subjects, both men and women, whom Cecilia de Val portraits remain alien to this world; the only reason to explain their always uncertain presence. The silence, if not the death, is eloquent of their exclusion. Their helplessness in the landscape is a symbol of the fracture of men with nature, of general malaise, of present seriousness.

Cecilia de Val rebuilds the region of air on earth, on floating landscapes in which clouds, snow and rivers, unveil through their variations disturbance, uncertainty, confusion, malaise, seriousness. According to Jean-Louis Garnell the landscape is a matter of photography, not of landscape.
