Elina Brotherus (Helsinki, Finland, 1972) is the most reputed artist from the influential Helsinki School of Photography, and one of the most acclaimed female visual artists in Europe. Her work is present in the permanent collections of institutions such as Centre Pompidou, Moderna Museet, CA2M, MAXXI, and Museum of Fine Arts of Houston, among many others. Her early work dealt with personal yet universal experiences, the presence and absence of love. In her series “The New Painting” (2000-05), Elina probed the relation of photography to art history and found inspiration in the iconography of classical painting. In “Model Studies” (2002-08) and “Artist and her model” (2005-2011), she continued to explore the human figure within a landscape, and the gaze of an artist on his/her model.
In her projects “12 ans après” (2011-2012) and “Annonciation” (2009-2013) Elina returns to the autobiographical approach, although more distanced than in her youth. Recently, she has been revisiting Fluxus event scores and other written instructions for performance-oriented art of the 1950s-70s. This brought her the Carte Blanche PMU prize 2017 that was presented as a solo show “Règle du jeu” (2016-17) at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Definitely, Elina is a woman on a mission.
